The Challenge of Focusing on What Needs to Be Done
“I just do what needs to be done!” A badge of honor right? Well, yes, no, maybe.
I was talking with a good friend the other day about some transitions both of us are facing in our lives. Some are personal and some are professional related. None of them are easy or straightforward and because of the way my brain works, I’m likely overthinking things. But my friend made the comment that many of these decisions are the kind that you should make earlier on in life (no comments about me being old). As we talked about this I had two thoughts:
• First was that goals and objectives change so we need to adapt and change with them. That’s a topic for another day.
• Second, was that one of the reason some of these decisions weren’t made earlier was that I was so focused on just doing what needed to be done.
In this post, I’d like to talk about some of the challenges that arise when we just focus on doing what needs to be done and how it has impacted my life.
Episode 22 - I Find Myself in the Lost & Found
After last weeks episode on focusing on what matters most I got a piece of feedback that changed the plans for this episode. The essential question in the feedback was what do you do when you feel lost or maybe don't know if what matters most has changed. So this week I want to talk to those of us, yes us as I can certainly relate to this feeling, that are feeling lost. Let's discuss how we will know if we are in the lost and found and what we can do about it.
LL Episode 19:Shred the Complaints & Doing Nothing
It's a busy busy world we live in. Many of us are driven to always be doing something. But sometimes that is the exact opposite of what is best. Many times, doing a version of nothing may be the absolute best thing you can do. Join me for this weeks episode and let's define doing nothing, figure out what happens when you tear a bunch of complaints in half and then talk about the when's of doing nothing.
LL Episode 18: Biking, Drawing from Your Well & Self Care
Over the last several months I've been pushing it pretty hard. There has been a lot going on trying to get this podcast and my tech one (Gadgets for Families) up and running. That's on top of my business consulting business and the craziness that comes with the end of a school year. So just a lot going on. When I combine that with with my drive to always want to be doing something meaningful and my perfectionist tendencies, it's been pretty intense. Take those experiences and combine them with some of the topics I have covered like dialing it back, knowing yourself, course correcting as well as some things I have been reading and I got thinking about how I'm doing. Not business progress or anything like that. Just how am I personally doing.
With that background, I'd like to spend our time today talking about caring for ourselves. Storytime and lessons learned from it are first and then let's talk about how we as leaders sometimes don't realize we are not taking care of ourselves, the impact that has on us and those that depend on us and more.
